KUTA… Town on the Move!

For the past couple of years, there has been a steady evolution going on down south. Kuta – Lombok’s south coast tourist resort – is a town on the move!

Shaking off its rustic “surfer hangout” vibe, Kuta now boasts a fresh new look with up-market villas rubbing shoulders with old-style backpacker places, and chic cafés popping up every few months.

While once relying heavily on the seasonal surfer market, Kuta now buzzes year round with tourists from all walks of life who come to enjoy the fantastic beaches and funky atmosphere of the south coast hub.

TRANSMART CARREFOUR TO OPEN IN JUNE

Lombok will soon have another modern mall, with the opening of the new Transmart Carrefour scheduled for 2 June.

The shopping centre is located on 1.3 hectares on Jl Selaparang, Mayura (near the main traffic lights in Sweta) and will house Carrefour and a CGV cinema complex, as well as a food hall and culinary centre, retail shops and entertainment centre.

THE SACRED TOMBS OF LOANG BALOQ

Most Indonesian people believe that old shrines and tombs hold special mystical powers, and this is particularly true if the shrine or tomb is the resting place of an influential public figure, such as a famous scholar.

In Lombok, Makam Loang Baloq is one of the most famous tombs on the island and considered sacred by the local Sasak people.

NEW LOOK INDONESIAN BANK CURRENCY RE-OPENS REDENOMINATION DEBATE

On 19 December 2016, Bank Indonesia introduced seven new banknotes and four coins with new designs of national heroes, traditional dances, and natural sites.

The new banknotes have nine to 12 enhanced security features, such as color-shifting metallic foil security patches, ultraviolet marks, images of the BI logo, and tactile patterns. Some are visible to the naked eye and others are not. The new security features are aimed at preventing counterfeiting.
