FIRST MATAHARI DEPARTMENT STORE OPENS IN LOMBOK

Progress on the Lombok Epicentrum Mall is racing ahead, with the “soft opening” of the first Matahari Department Store in Lombok taking place on Monday, 15 June 2015.

On the first day of opening, tens of thousands of people flooded into the mall – which is still under construction – to see first-hand the stylish building that will change the face of shopping in Lombok.

INDONESIA – VISA FREE FOR 45 COUNTRIES

The Indonesian government has formally announced visa-free travel for citizens from 45 countries, in a bid to boost tourism and improve  relations with those countries.

President Joko Widodo signed the presidential regulation on visa-free travel for tourists on 9 June 2015.

GARUDA PREPARES FOR PEAK TRAVEL IN JULY

Garuda Indonesia is preparing 1.61 million airline seats to meet passenger demand over the peak 2015 Idul Fitri or Lebaran holiday period.
 
“A million seats will be provided during the holiday period for homecoming travel during Lebaran 2015. The exact dates (for the extra seats) will begin on 8 July and run until 27 July 2015 – 8 days before Lebaran until 10 days after Lebaran,” said Vice-president of Corporate Communications for Garuda, Pujobroto, as quoted by Metrobali.com.

GILI T ORGANIC WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN

The Gili Eco Trust (GET) is a local non-governmental organisation, originally created in 2000 to protect coral reefs from destructive fishing practices around the three Gili islands.

Over the years, GET has extended its activities to include many other “Eco projects”. The organisation’s main project on land is improving waste management.

HOTELS, TICKETS, SALARIES MUST BE PAID IN RUPIAH

Indonesia’s Central Bank formally announced the new regulation that hotel rooms, airline tickets, property leases and most salaries must be paid in rupiah, effective from 1 July 2015.

The regulation banning the use of US dollars for many domestic transactions was first announced in April and confirmed on 9 June, as part of a strategy to help prop up the weakening currency.

Qunci Villas held an innovative School Cooking Competition for local students recently and the results show that Lombok has some talented ‘Master Chefs’ in the making!

Three schools competed in the competition held at the stylish resort in Mangsit on Sunday, 14 June.
