LOMBOK – NYEPI ESCAPES!

Nyepi, the “day of silence”, will be celebrated in Bali on 21 March this year. For 24 hours, people in Bali are required to stay inside and avoid all light and noise. Restaurants and bars are closed, the streets are quiet and there are no flights into or out of Bali airport.

Our Balinese community in Lombok also celebrates Nyepi but, as we’re a multi-cultural island, we keep the lights on and life goes on as normal. Restaurants and bars are open, there’s music and dancing, and all the usual fun in the sun. Plus, we join with our Hindu friends for one of the best Ogoh-ogoh parades around!

YOU CAN SEE BALI IN LOMBOK!

Here in Lombok, the local people have a saying: “You can see Bali in Lombok... but you can’t see Lombok in Bali!

This is especially true during Nyepi – the Balinese Hindu “Day of Silence” – when you really can see Bali in Lombok!

Many people assume that Balinese Hindus only live in Bali but, with the two islands being so close together, Balinese settlement in Lombok dates back for centuries. Today, Balinese communities and temples are found all around the west coast and in the cities.

It’s time to start training for the Gili Triathlon – happening on Gili Trawangan on Saturday, 28 March this year!

Organised by the Gili Eco Trust, the Gili Triathlon is a fun-filled and action-packed event for competitors and spectators, with lots of activities including raffles and games, as well as the excitement of the main Triathlon event.

LION AIR… Causing Uproar!

Lion Air – Indonesia’s largest low-cost airline and second largest national airline – went into a state resembling corporate meltdown on Wednesday, 18 February 2015, when the airline suddenly and without prior notice cancelled all its evening flights departing Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

Incongruously blaming the resulting delays on technical issues affecting 3 of its 93 aircraft, thousands of passengers were left stranded in Jakarta and connecting airports across the nation, with little or no information on the developing situation shared by ground staff of the airline.

WHO FLIES ON TIME?

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportationhas released on-time performance ratings for the main domestic airlines in Indonesia.

The data presented only covers flight performance between January – December 2014 and does not include the massive nation-wide delays occurring on Lion Airon 18 February 2015, which threw national aviation into chaos.

DAVE PYNT AT QUNCI VILLAS

Qunci Villas in Mangsit did it again – with another fantastic “Chefs in the Wild” dinner as part of their “Month of Love” events in February!

With flaming grills set up alongside Quah Restaurant, Dave Pynt, chef and owner of Burnt Ends Restaurant in Singapore – and one of world’s most accomplished BBQ specialists – prepared a special dinner showcasing his innovative barbeque techniques for around 60 VIP guests at the resort.

The Gili Eco Trust and Cats of Gili are holding their next big free Horse and Cat Clinics, covering the three Gilis from 9 to 20 March, 2015.

Free clinics will be held for the care of both cats and horses from 9 March and will take place for 5 days on Gili T, 4 days on Gili Air and 3 days on Gili Meno.
