“SEE YA LATER, JETSTAR!”

Despite concerted efforts by the Lombok Hotel Association and the Ministry of Tourism to save the Jetstar flights between Lombok and Perth, Jetstar will go ahead with its planned suspension of the route on 17 October 2014.

Jetstar commenced the direct flights between Lombok and West Australia’s capital city on 24 September 2013 but less than a year later, on 5 June, announced that it would suspend the flights in October citing “lack of demand for the service” as the reason for the suspension.

DROUGHT HITS LOMBOK AND FIRES ON MT RINJANI

Although many areas of Lombok are hit hard every year during the dry season, especially in the east, centre and south of the island, this year’s long drought has reached critical levels.

The dry season started early this year, in April, and drought conditions were already recognised as early as May, with the Governor declaring a State of Emergency in June.

GET GETS INTO GLASS

The Gili Eco Trust (GET) is now ‘turning trash into trendy’ with a new ‘upcycling’ workshop to recycle glass on Gili Trawangan.

The glass upcycling programme was born out of the need to do something with the thousands of glass bottles thrown out as rubbish by hotels, bars and restaurants on the island.

MERPATI – A GROUNDED PIGEON

As reported by the State News Agency, Antara, the Minister for State-owned Enterprises, Dahlan Iskan, has all but surrendered to the fact that Merpati Nusantara Airline is now past redemption.

The Minister is in charge of the grounded state-owned airline, Merpati (the Indonesian name for a pigeon).
