MAKING REEFS IN LOMBOK!

Tens of thousands of people come to Lombok every year for the superb diving, which many compare to the best dive sites in Thailand.

Protecting our island’s reefs and encouraging coral growth is a priority… thanks largely to the efforts of the Gili Eco Trust. Now Senggigi has a new Artificial Reef Park where visitors can snorkel and dive amongst fantastic sculptures while watching the coral grow. See our special feature on pages 34 and 35.

LOMBOK – GET READY TO DANCE!

Anyone who has attended the Lombok Dance Festival in previous years knows that this event is a once-a-year opportunity to immerse oneself in a world of graceful movement, swirling costumes and breath-taking performances by world-class dancers.

SANGEANG VOLCANO ERUPTION CAUSES TRAVEL CHAOS

A volcanic eruption on Sangeang Island, near Sumbawa, caused chaos for inter-island travel in the region, as well as causing some Australian flights to be cancelled.

Sangeang Island is located to the north-east of Sumbawa Island and around 310km east of Lombok.

Gunung Api Sangeang, the active volcano that dominates the island, erupted on Friday, 30 May, sending out a distinctive spaceship-shaped ring of smoke 15-20 metres high into the air.

Designed by Australian developers, in cooperation with Gili T businesses, the new app will allow travellers to download key information about Gili T all in one place, including activities, ATM locations, rental prices for equipment, cidomo, bikes, etc., as well as booking hotels, fast boat transfers and more through the app.

SENGGIGI’S UNDERWATER ART MUSEUM

As of 24 May 2014, Senggigi Beach has its first underwater art museum or “ARTificial Reef Park, designed to regenerate the reef system and provide a unique attraction for snorkellers and divers in Senggigi.

The idea was a dream of Teguh Ostenrik – an acclaimed Indonesian artist and avid diver. In his younger years, Teguh often visited Lombok and loved to dive and snorkel off Senggigi Beach, catching abundant squid and lobster on the reef.

THE BEACH CLUB SENGGIGI… The End of an Era

A mixed group of people gathered to bid a fond farewell on Saturday, 31 May 2014 as The Beach Club Senggigi served its last beer.

The popular bar and café, operated by Australian expats Glenn and Dee, has been a mainstay for tourists, expats and locals alike for the past 8 years – a friendly place to gather for a few drinks, to hunch over the bar watching Aussie rules football and epic Grand Prix races, or to enjoy the company of the happy staff while enjoying a good steak dinner on the beach.
