BAU NYALE IN LOMBOK

Lombok has just celebrated its famous Bau Nyale Festival with thousands of people flocking to Kuta and our south coast beaches to witness this fantastic tradition, steeped in local legend.

Lombok’s Sasak people say that the celebration of Bau Nyale marks the changing of the seasons, bringing an end to the rains and winds of the monsoon cycle, and that seems to hold true.

BAU NYALE... Lombok’s Unique Sea Worm Festival!

“Bau Nyale”, one of Lombok’s most important and popular festivals, was held from 15 - 20 February this year and attracted thousands of visitors to the south coast.

Bau Nyale (meaning “to catch Nyale” in the local Sasak language) is a cultural tradition said to date back to the 16th century and is centred on the seasonal appearance of Nyale (a variety of Palolo worm found in tropical waters in certain parts of the world, including Lombok).

INDONESIAN DOMESTIC AIRFARES INCREASE

The Indonesian government has agreed to a temporary increase in domestic airfares, as requested by the Indonesian National Air Carrier Association (INACA) recently.

The slight increase has been made necessary for Indonesian airlines in order to cover the cost of aviation fuel and compensate for the declining value of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US dollar.

NEW AUSTRALIAN CONSUL-GENERAL IN BALI

Majell Hind has been appointed as the new Consul-General of Australia in Bali.

Hind is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was until recently Counselor (Management) and Consul-General at the Australian Embassy in Kabul. She previously served as Consul-General at the Australian High Commissions in Kuala Lumpur and Port Moresby, and has undertaken a number of short-term missions, including to Jakarta.
