LHA TAKES CHARGE OF TOURISM PROMOTION

The Lombok Hotel Association (LHA) continues to be the driving force behind tourism promotion for Lombok, in many cases having to “go it alone” because of lack of government support.

The LHA, made up of 28 members from Lombok’s largest hotels, was largely responsible for the commencement of both Jetstar and Tiger Air direct international flights to Lombok in 2013.

LOMBOK WINNERS IN TRIPADVISOR TRAVELERS' CHOICE AWARDS

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, has announced its “2013 Travelers' Choice” winners and “2014 Best Hotels” – and among the various winners are some of our top Lombok properties.

The annual awards, which TripAdvisor compiles by crunching review data from its 60 million monthly users, recognises destinations and properties around the world, in different categories including Luxury, Bargain, Service, B&B’s and Inns, and All-Inclusive.

• Don’t forget Lombok’s big event this week – the Bau Nyale Festival, being held until 20 February. The “core event” takes place on Wednesday, 19 February starting with performances on the beachfront at Kuta in South Lombok, followed by a procession in the late afternoon to Seger Beach, where the main activities take place.

If you plan to attend the festival, allow plenty of time to reach Seger Beach as tens of thousands of people crowded onto the beach last year, with queuing up to two hours. Just be patient and make the journey part of the experience!

A LOVELY MONTH AT QUNCI VILLAS

Those in Lombok have been treated to some out-of-the-ordinary events this month, as Qunci Villas hosts its “Month of Love” programme, celebrating romance, love of food and the arts.

On Saturday, 1 February, guests enjoyed a 5-course gourmet dinner prepared by visiting international guest chef, Andrew Walsh, currently Executive Head Chef at Esquina Restaurant in Singapore.

The Rotary Club of Bali, Seminyak on behalf of The Smile Foundation of Bali, will celebrate eight years of helping nearly 2,000 people afflicted with cranio-facial deformities or injuries at the “Have a Heart” charity event on Saturday, 22 February.

THE END FOR MERPATI AIRLINES?

Years of struggling to stay one step ahead of bankruptcy seem to have come to an end for Merpati Nusantara Airlines, with the company suspending all flights on 1 February, 2014.

The airline, which flies to underserved regions in Indonesia, announced the suspension of business after it grounded all flights, leaving passengers stranded at remote airports across Indonesia and prompting a harsh warning from transportation officials.
