RINJANI TREKKING SEASON CLOSED

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has closed the Gunung Rinjani volcano to trekking, effective from 10 January 2014.

All tourist gateways to Mount Rinjani – including Sembalun, Senaru, Torean, and Timbanuh – are now officially closed.

CHINESE NEW YEAR ON LOMBOK

Chinese New Year is on 31 January this year, and the Chinese community in Lombok will be celebrating as we bid goodbye to the Year of the Water Snake.

2014 is the Year of the Horse and, according to the Chinese Five Element Astrology Calendar, has the element of wood; therefore we can say 2014 is the year of the Wooden Horse.

2013 RECORD BREAKING TOURISM ARRIVALS

The foreign arrival figures for Bali through to the end of November 2013 have been tallied by balidiscovery.com and total 2.97 million visitors. This figure surpasses the highest number of arrivals for any year in the history of Bali tourism, even before figures for December have been added.

November arrivals totaled 307,208 – an increase of 26.95% over November 2012, when Bali had 241,985 foreign visitors.

ANOTHER PUBLIC FERRY DISASTER

Indonesia’s poor record for safety on its public ferries took one more hit on Friday, 3 January, when another ferry sank on the route between Lombok and Sumbawa.

Three people were confirmed dead – and around a dozen more were feared missing and dead – after rescue operations concluded. There was no official data for the exact number of passengers on board the ferry.
