INDEPENDENCE DAY… Continuing the Celebrations

It’s been a month of celebrations in Lombok, culminating with the national holiday for Indonesian Independence Day (Hari Merdeka) on Saturday, 17 August.

Independence Day is still important for most Indonesians, perhaps because the country has only been an independent nation for 68 years and there are still those alive today who remember what life was like under Dutch colonial rule.

MENGAPA DINAS PARIWISATA LOBAR MERUSAK PEMANDANGAN WISATA?

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO OUR VIEWS?

The West Lombok Department of Tourism (Dinas Pariwisata Lombok Barat) could never be accused of knowing what they are doing when it comes to developing tourism in the region, but the latest building projects near Senggigi have businesses, investors and local residents up in arms.

Two of the finest views on the drive from the cities to Senggigi are from the headlands at Batu Layar and Batu Bolong. Both look out over stunning panoramas of west coast beaches and are popular places for viewing the gorgeous sunsets across the Lombok Strait to Bali.

QUESTION: I have just arrived in Lombok to get away from the mad traffic jams in Bali. Driving a motorbike there is like playing Russian Roulette on wheels!

I intend to hire a bike here and do a leisurely tour of the sights along the coastal road north of the holiday town of Senggigi. The views of the ocean and the Gili Islands are truly breathtaking, I’m told. Is there anything I should know about driving in Lombok, so I can be safe?

MR FIXER: I know what you mean about driving in Bali. Road construction (especially near the new airport underpass) seems permanent and continuous. Things are moved around for your entertainment pleasure in the middle of the night to make the next day’s driving a bit more exciting!

IN GOOD TASTE

Good day, everyone, and welcome to paradise! Finally we’ve reached the end of Ramadan and the fasting month is finished. I must say, when Idul Fitri coincides with the busy season on our island, things become very hectic!
