LEBARAN IN LOMBOK!

Over the next week, the whole island will be preparing for the celebrations that mark the end of Ramadan on 8 and 9 August. Idul Fitri, or Lebaran, is one of the most important times of the year in Indonesia… a time of celebration and reunions with families and friends. This is a very happy time in Lombok, with many celebrations around the island. Read our special feature on pages 10 and 26 for details.

LEBARAN… A Time for Celebrations!

The month of Ramadan is due to end on 8 August this year and for those who are in Lombok at this time, it’s a great opportunity to join in the celebrations that take place at the end of a month of fasting.

The two days, 8 and 9 August, are especially happy occasions as the whole nation celebrates Idul Fitri, also known as Lebaran (or Eid al-Fitr). Similar in spirit to Christmas for westerners, Lebaran is the time for friends and family to get together and celebrate.

JUSTICE – GILI T STYLE!

The Gilis have no permanent police force but that doesn’t stop island security from dealing with theft quickly and effectively.

The photo above was posted on facebook last week as a warning to tourists who steal while on Gili Trawangan.

The Dutch tourist was allegedly caught stealing on CCTV (closed circuit camera) in a local café. The incident occurred when another tourist, who had stomach problems, left her bag in the café while she went to the toilet.

• The official public holidays for Idul Fitri / Lebaran are 8 and 9 August this year. The closest comparison to these would be Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the west (and we know how nobody wants to work on Christmas Day!) Please be patient if your hotel or restaurant seems to be understaffed… we will return to normal service shortly!

ANNA’S GIFT SHOP... A Little Treasure Trove

Located in The Galeria Shops, just near Warung Botol and Rambo Pet Shop on the main street in Senggigi, Anna’s Gift Shop is a little treasure trove of gifts and unique collectibles.

We especially love the hand-painted wooden statues being created by the shop’s owner, Dianne. She has taken the traditional wooden statues so well-known in Lombok and sold in so many of the handicraft shops here, and given them a new lease of life with stunning contemporary designs and colours.

QUESTION: I am a single male pensioner who has decided to spend half my time in Europe and the other half in the relaxing climate of Lombok.

I have rented a small house in the popular tourist area of Green Valley.  It has everything I need, including a fridge which I like to keep well stocked with fresh food. I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.

SQUARE RESTAURANT... A CUT ABOVE

Virtually since it first opened in December 2006, Square Restaurant has established itself as “a cut above the rest”. Ask almost any Lombok resident to recommend the best restaurant in Senggigi, and “Square” will be among the top three choices.

The formula for success is the same as for any great restaurant around the world: consistently good food and service, and a comfortable atmosphere which encourages guests to relax and enjoy the dining experience.
