TREK IN LOMBOK!

Trekking and hiking enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the 2013 trekking season has started in Lombok and that routes for climbing our famous volcano, Mt Rinjani, are now open.

The volcano was closed to trekking in January and re-opened on 1 April 2013. The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR) closes the route every year during the monsoon season to protect the safety of climbers and to carry out maintenance on trails within the park.

NTB GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS

Lombok and Sumbawa (the two islands forming the province of Nusa Tenggara Barat or NTB) is gearing up to elect its Governor and Vice Governor next month.

Gubernatorial elections for the province are held every five years. The next election is scheduled to take place on 13 May2013.

BAWA HELPS OUT LOMBOK’S STREET DOGS

The team from the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) were in Lombok from 8 -14 April to help out with the problem of street dogs on the island.

Comprised of two veterinarians and five veterinary assistants, the BAWA team is usually based in Bali, where they carry out dog rescue, community education and animal welfare projects for the non-profit organisation.

LION AIR TO PAY COMPENSATION TO CRASH VICTIMS

Lion Air has confirmed that they will pay Rp 55 million (approx US $5,500) to each of the 101 passengers on board its ill-fated Boeing 737-800 that crashed just short of the runway at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airporton Saturday, 13 April 2013.

As reported by The Jakarta Post, Lion Air Service Manager, Captain Daniel Putut, said: “The company has allocated Rp 5.5 billion for all 101 passengers, meaning that each passenger will receive Rp 55 million.”

PROPOSED FUEL HIKE FOR PRIVATE VEHICLES

The Indonesian government is planning to increase the cost of premium gasoline, possibly set to take place sometime in the month of May 2013.

Motorcycles and yellow-plated public transportation vehicles are slated  to continue to pay the current price of Rp 4,500 per litre (approx US $0.45), while private vehicles will pay a higher price of Rp 6,500 per litre (approx US $0.65).

IN GOOD TASTE

Good day, Lombok travellers! This issue  is a very hard one for me to write as it is my last “In Good Taste” as the Executive Chef at Qunci Villas. 

It's been a fantastic year working with my wonderful staff at Qunci, but I'm moving on to something bigger. I'm still in the area but you'll have to wait to see where I’ll be cooking up a storm next!

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA TO INCLUDE MEALS ON BALI FLIGHTS

Virgin Australia has announced a significant upgrade in their food and beverage services on all flights from Australia to Bali and Phuket, as well as Trans-continental flights.

Effective from 24 April 2013, all flights to Denpasar and Phuket will serve guests, regardless of fare type, a complimentary hot meal and beverages, upgrading the service offering to align with current Trans-Continental flights.

QUESTION: I have just met the girl of my dreams and we have decided to set up home together in a small rented villa in the popular tourist area of Senggigi. 

My new girlfriend arrived last night with her suitcase and as she started to unpack, I noticed out of the corner of my eye she had a nurse’s outfit, a French Maid’s outfit and a police woman’s uniform.

LOCAL SURFER USMAN TRIOKO TAKES ON HAWAII

When you think of success stories, one almost expects some expanding business or real estate development here in Lombok. This is a success story of a different kind and one worthy of recognition.

Usman Trioko is a surfer, born in Sekotong in Southwest Lombok and growing up on the superb waves at Desert Point (Bangko Bangko). Here he was able to hone his surfing talent to world-class standards. Usman has always had heaps of natural talent anyway, making him a standout surfer whenever he’s out on the waves
