SPRING INTO LOMBOK!

With the worst of the rainy season behind us and the celebration of Spring Equinox in the northern hemisphere on 20 March, it’s almost like Spring in Lombok!

April is a wonderful time to visit Lombok – and the best time to take advantage of “low season” discounts and cheap rates at hotels and resorts on the island.

HONG KONG DELEGATES LOOK CLOSELY AT LOMBOK

Many VIP’s from Hong Kong have been arriving in Lombok over the past two weeks, as the Hong Kong Tourism Ministry meets with our local tourism representatives to explore ways to boost tourism between the two destinations.

The friendship between Hong Kong and Lombok is being led by The Lombok Hotels Association (LHA), who recently hosted visits by the Hong Kong Commissioner of Tourism and visiting authorities and, last week, a delegation of 21 travel agents from Hong Kong.

BOOMING FLIGHT AND PASSENGER NUMBERS IN BALI

Bali Daily (The Jakarta Post) reports that the ongoing massive upgrade of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has done nothing to dissuade arriving passengers in record numbers from flowing through the construction site in 2012.

National Airport Authority, Angkasa Pura I recorded 113,562 incoming and outgoing domestic and international flights in 2012. This represents 9,000 more flights than the 103,771 flights recorded in 2011.

• Travelling between Bali and Senggigi has never been easier, thanks to Marina Srikandi fast boat transfers.

Marina Srikandi operates three transfers every day between Padang Bai Harbour (Bali) and Senggigi (Lombok), with Lombok departures and arrivals directly from the jetty on Senggigi Beach (near Santosa Villas and Resort).

BEWARE OF LANDSLIDES IN THE PUSUK PASS

The Pusuk Pass – the interior access road to the north of the island which originates in Gunung Sari and terminates in Bangsal – was closed again last week due to landslides.

Vehicles travelling the mountain pass were banked up for hours as heavy earth-moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris that blocked the road.

DELICIOUS NEW MENUS AT QUNCI VILLAS

Four of us had the pleasure of tasting selections from the new menus from Quali and Quah Restaurants at Qunci Villas last week.

Qunci consistently rates as one of the best dining venues in Lombok and it’s easy to see why. Seated at a table on the beach, with powerful lights in the trees lighting up the turquoise ocean and highlighting small waves foaming on the beach only metres away, the mood is immediately soothing.

QUESTION:  According to 95% of all the financial analysts, the major western economies (especially those in Europe), are not likely to see growth for years. That’s why my brother Colin and I (along with the rest of the family), are interested in investing in the holiday island of Lombok.

Property in Asia is set to rocket, whereas European and UK based property is stagnant or declining.

NEW OWL SPECIES DISCOVERED IN LOMBOK

It’s not every day that a new species of bird is discovered. Especially one as large as an owl. And especially one that is living, literally, in our own backyards – here in Lombok!

Back in December 2012, I received an email from Alan Leishman, a guest at The Studio on The Hill, near Senggigi. Alan had been staying in our villa for a couple of months and was recording his observations of birds and butterflies. Owls are most easily identified by their distinctive calls at night.

IN GOOD TASTE

Good day all! This weeks recipe is one that I learned in February when Qunci Villas sent myself and two other chefs to the beautiful city of Chiang Mai in Thailand.

We learned to cook this dish under one of Thailand’s most famous chefs, Sompon, at the Chiang Mai Thai Cooking School, where we spent a great week and cooked over 55 different Thai dishes in 5 days!

My oh my… MAHAMAYA!

It’s 10 o’clock on a perfect blue sky day and we are skimming across the water towards Gili Meno – a small island just off the northwest coast of Lombok.

The sea is a brilliant blue, although a fast current is running and choppy waves are buffeting our boat. But the bumpy ride doesn’t matter – it’s only a 25 minute trip out to the island from Teluk Kodek harbour and soon we are pulling up to a incredible white sand beach.
