PLEASE HELP BABY SITI

We first published a story about local baby, Siti Zahwa, in Issue 119 of The Lombok Guide on 9 July 2012. The response from our readers was fantastic, with many people sending donations to help care for the 4 month old baby with a terrible skin condition living in a poor and remote village in Lombok.

Siti Zahwa was born with a congenital skin disease that causes itchy scales to form all over her body. The dry scaly skin then cracks open, leaving the baby covered with nasty blisters and sores; forcing her to live in constant pain and putting her at risk of infections.

QUESTION: Since my wife and I came to the tourist hot spot of Lombok, she hasn’t shut up about how great it is. DON’T MISS THE RICE WAR!

Every year a very special war takes place at Lingsar Temple in West Lombok. This isn’t a riot between warring groups and it isn’t a real war, although the name “Perang Topat” translates as “Rice Cake War”.

Topat is short for “ketupat” and are small diamond-shaped parcels of rice, which have been wrapped in woven coconut leaves and boiled – a delicious local alternative to ordinary rice. In this friendly war, Hindus and Muslims stage a mock battle, hurling the topat at each other amidst much fun and laughter.
