SAILING IN LOMBOK!

Perfect sunny days and cool nights make touring Lombok a pleasure at this time of the year – especially for Sail Indonesia participants who are currently arriving on our shores.

For the past few weeks we have seen these graceful boats sailing off our coast, mooring in Senggigi Bay and off the Gili Islands. The majority of the fleet will stop over at Medana Bay Marina in North Lombok over the coming weeks… tourists are welcome to visit and enjoy the wonderful spectacle of sleek yachts in the peaceful bay of the marina.

GARUDA LINKS LOMBOK TO MAKASSAR

Garuda Indonesia has just opened another new route out of Lombok International Airport, linking Lombok with Makassar (formerly Ujang Pandang) in Sulawesi.

Daily flights between Lombok and Makassar will commence on 16 October, 2012 and depart Makassar at 11.15am. Flights from Lombok to Makassar depart at 13.20 (1.20pm). Flight time is around 1 hour and 25 minutes.

• Lombok has successfully hosted the 33rd conference of the ASEAN Inter-Parliament Assembly, known as AIPA. The conference was held over seven days, from 16 – 22 September, with the majority of events taking place in and around Senggigi.

The AIPA membership consists of the leaders of parliaments from 10 ASEAN countries. Around 350 participants of AIPA were hosted during the event.

ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR SAIL INDONESIA 2012!

Medana Bay Marina has once again successfully hosted participants in the international yachting event, Sail Indonesia.

Boats from around the world have been arriving in Lombok for the past month, with many taking advantage of safe moorings and facilities at Medana Bay Marina in North Lombok.

DRIVE IN LOMBOK – AT YOUR PERIL!

Many tourists, when they first come to Lombok, like to rent a car or motorcycle so that they can sight-see around the island.

Cars and bikes are not expensive to rent but you need an International Driving Licence or Rp 50-100,000 if you get stopped by ‘Lombok’s Finest’ in one of their frequent roadblocks.

SAFEGUARDING THE MEMORY

The State News Agency (Antara) reports that the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) are preparing to safeguard ceremonies scheduled in Bali to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bali Bombing on 12 October, 2012.

The main focus of those commemorations will be an early morning ceremony at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK) on Friday, 12 October, attended by Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

DIESEL TANKERS GET POLICE ESCORT

Local newspapers report that tankers carrying diesel (known locally as solar) are currently being escorted to distribution points by police, due to a spate of hold ups on the road.

State owned fuel company, Pertamina, requested the police escorts after two tankers carrying diesel to petrol stations were held up on the road by looters earlier this month. One of the tankers was carrying 5,000 litres, while the other held 15,000 litres of the fuel.

MORE CONCERNS FOR PUBLIC FERRIES

Another inter-island ferry operating between Lombok and Padangbai in Bali has run aground on 7 September, 2012.

The Rafelia II, with 187 passengers aboard, was unable to hold its course in strong winds, running aground near the landing dock in Bali during a low tide.

QUESTION: The holiday town of Senggigi in sunny Lombok is hard to beat for a great “night out with the boys”. It has everything!

Plenty of restaurants to choose from, bars and karaoke clubs, and the ‘ever popular’ Happy Café with great live music, where I can get my sinuses cleared for free. If the night is still young, you can end the night at the Marina Night Club and Sports Bar.

PROJECT MOMENTUM… Protecting our Sharks and Mantas

Congratulations to the Gili Eco Trust and Aquatic Alliance who have just won a grant from Project AWARE to support their marine conservation efforts in Indonesia.

Working together in a joint initiative called “Project Momentum”, Gili Eco Trust and Aquatic Alliance were selected as one of the five winners in the grant contest – and were the only project in Indonesia to win.
