• A couple of weeks ago the first series of the NRL State of Origin Game had locals and tourists in a frenzy as they raced around Senggigi trying to find a place that was screening the international football match. Most managed to find their way to The Beach Club in Batu Bolong where an enthusiastic crowd packed out the bar.

The Beach Club will be screening the 2nd State of Origin game on 13 June at 5:30pm and match 3 will be screened on 4 July at 5.30pm.

BUFFALO RACES… HOLY COW!

The West Sumbawa Government held an exhibition of “Barapan Kebo” on 2 and 3 June as part of their promotional drive to attract visitors to West Sumbawa.

Of course, as is typical of all events organised by local governments, there was scarcely any publicity for the event and hardly anyone knew about it, but we saw the hastily-erected sign in Senggigi and went along to check it out.

The construction of the submarine power cable link between North Lombok and the Gilis has been planned since early 2009 but physical work on the project only began in early 2011.

DEWI’S GOING TO UNIVERSITY!

We get so many emails every week, many of them negative, so it’s lovely to hear some really positive news from Amelia in the UK. Amelia and her husband have been sponsoring a young girl from Sade near Kuta for the past few years.

Regular readers may remember the feature story we did on Dewi, who fought to attend school when her parents couldn’t pay the fees any longer and needed her to work in their fields.

QUESTION: My name is Yuna Long and I am a buxom brunette, 42.24.36, of distant Chinese descent. I have been living alone in my villa with pool and tropical valley views since my husband died over a year ago now.

It can get quite lonely here as my villa is somewhat isolated. Luckily, my husband had the foresight to install an alarm system before he died, which up till now has been working perfectly.  Just recently, however, the alarm system has been setting off for no apparent reason.

Gili Air

Recently I attended a meeting with representatives from all the dive shops on Gili Air. I have been here for eight months now and it was good to put names to the faces I’ve been saying hello to all this time. I could, of course, have tried to be more social and hung out at Chillout bar, like many of the dive professionals on this island, but I just don’t have the stamina. Plus, downloaded TV shows on my laptop won’t watch themselves after work!
